The Vegan Soft Pretzel

Who doesn't love a good salty, doughy soft pretzel?! And who knew it could be so easy to make at home?! You don't have to slave away for hours to satisfy your soft pretzel craving and today we have a simple and easy recipe for all our carb lovers out there (aka everyone).

Ingredients:

1.5 cups warm water

1 tbsp white sugar

2 tsp salt

4.5 cups all-purpose flour

1/4 oz active dry yeast

2 tsbp vegan margarine

Canola oil

2/3 cup baking soda

Coarse or Himalayan salt

Preheat oven to 450F.

In a bowl, mix together the water, sugar, and salt.

Add the yeast and let it sit on top for about 5 minutes before combining.

Add in the butter and the flour and begin to mix with an electric beater and knead until the dough becomes smooth.

Put the dough in a greased bowl and let it sit, covered, in a warm area for about 50 minutes until the dough has doubled.

Mix the water and baking soda in a pot and bring to a boil. Prepare a baking sheet by greasing it or lining it with parchment paper.

Meanwhile, it's time to shape your pretzels- this is the hard part. You want to separate the dough into 8 pieces and then roll them out into a thick rope. Make them into a "U" shape, cross them over each other, press them down at the bottom of the U and you should have a (somewhat) pretzel-like shape! But don't worry, here at Culinary Cousins we do not discriminate against different shapes and sizes. All pretzels are worthy of love and admiration!

Place each pretzel into the boiling water individually for 30 seconds. Once boiled, place them on the baking sheet and sprinkle with salt.

Bake for 12-14 minutes or until they are a nice golden-brown colour.

Et voila! Homemade vegan soft pretzels. Doesn't get much better than that!

PS. Lots of love to Merryl, a good friend of the Culinary Cousins, who wanted to make soft pretzels in the first place, which brought us to this great new recipe that we are now sharing with you! This recipe would not be blessing everyone's taste buds without her wonderful idea and culinary efforts.
